The Echo in Our Minds: Understanding Auditory Processing in Adult Performers with ADHD

Uncategorized Dec 21, 2023

Introduction
The fascinating world of ADHD has led me to delve deep into the myriad ways of how the condition affects adults, beyond the commonly known symptoms. A particularly intriguing aspect is the auditory challenges faced by many of my patients. Among these, a unique and often misunderstood phenomenon is the delay between speaking and hearing one's own voice. This auditory delay not only sheds light on the complexities of ADHD but also intersects with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD).

Whilst I have been aware of this phenomenon for many years, it’s only in the last couple of days after a discussion with one of many patients in the arts world, who conveyed their experiences to a much more in-depth level, that I have been prompted and encouraged to investigate CAPD further and write this blog.

Deciphering Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)
CAPD is a condition that affects how the brain processes auditory information. It's not about hearing loss but rather about ...

Parenting with a little ADHDer

Noticing signs of ADHD in your child and taking that first step to beginning their ADHD journey can be tough for a parent. Whether you yourself have ADHD or not you may feel anxious, begin to overthink and stress about what you can do or what you should do at home.

Their Environment

Some of the most common ADHD symptoms are inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. This at times can cause accidents or injury. Ensuring your children's environment is as safe as possible is important for them to feel safe and for you to feel relaxed around their safety.

All children require an interesting and stimulating environment that will give them opportunities to explore, discover and develop their life skills. Children with ADHD are no different. What is imperative for a child with ADHD is that they are properly supervised. Do not set them up to fail or have an accident

Although you may feel pressured to, you do not need to give your child constant attention but you do have to be a...

The Power of the Idea that makes you want to/need to, spend and spend and spend

Uncategorized Dec 29, 2020

The above example of purchasing a holiday to the Maldives may be a bit extreme but I am sure there are many of you who could cite similar examples of when the need to splash the cash takes control and before you know it, you are already punching into the checkout the 3 security numbers on the back of your debit or credit card. Once that tiny ‘idea seed’ has been sown in your brain, it will very quickly make Jack’s Beanstalk look like a nuisance weed in the back garden that can be quickly banished with a squirt of Roundup or something similar.

This will be good for me…… This is just what I need……. It will encourage me to be more sociable…… The exercise involved will do me good……. This could open several doors for me.

It does not matter what the idea is, once it takes hold, there is always an extensive list of the many positive possibilities and then there is the list of why you should not, and, oh dear, there is nothing on this list. So, it is full steam ahead and nothing can stop yo...

"Fraudster, Imposter Alert

Uncategorized Jun 04, 2020

Chatting to one you today and this came up again. So, thought I would ask about it here. How many of you, say in the workplace or elsewhere look like to the onlooker that you are amazing at what you do and a leader in your field? And of the same people, despite how others view you, how many of you feel like a fraudster or imposter who will get found out at some point because of the chaos that goes on backstage that no one gets to see?

I posted this on my Facebook page and there has been a huge response to confirm that this is very much how it feels for many people with ADHD.

However, you ARE AMAZING with the things you are good at. It's the normal every day things that are difficult and that's what we can help you with. Keep being amazing but let us help you get your other stuff done.

ADHD and Sleep. What are you, a Night Owl or a Morning Lark?

Uncategorized May 30, 2020

With ADHD, there is frequently an issue with sleep.  Some people are early risers, do their best work in the morning and go to bed early. These are the 'Larks'. However, there is a significant number of others with ADHD who feel that they function better  at night and can often still be working away in the wee small hours. These are the 'Owls'.

Are you a Night Owl or a Morning Lark?

Your chronotype is your natural inclination with regard to the times of day when you prefer to sleep or when you are most alert or energetic.

Night Owl and Morning Lark are two types of chronotypes. The third chronotype is the in-between, balanced version of these two.

The type of chronotype you are is linked to your circadian rhythm; this is your inner clock that regulates your sleep/wake cycle. For many people with ADHD, this rhythm is disturbed and this can contribute to them being a Night Owl.

The research suggests that we don’t yet know what is the cause and consequence of this. However, it does ...
